I had the same problem with the clutch, when it smokes you smell it burning, and then you know it is time to replace it.

As the clutch it RX4 is a weak spot, you should try to go uphill without stopping and using the clutch to start moving again. If you can not, then find a different way or you will "cook" the clutch.

i got the same experience with a Toyota RAV-4.
We tested many Suv's and 4wheel driven car's before we got the
RX4. And the clutch of this RAV stuck in the middle and we tried to climb up
an acclivity, but the clutch baked and after we got back on the street
i pulled the clutch pedal with my foot up.

the smoke and the stench was very awful. that was the reason we didn't
choose the RAV-4
