Wattiefe?

Bin schon gespannt, was Renault dazu sagen wird!

Wading depth

Beitrag von Ilan RX4 »

The rule of thumb for wading is never to cross water deeper then half of the wheel size.

You can cross-deeper water if you remember the following:
1. Never go too fast as you can wet your electrical systems.
2. Water can enter the rear deferential on the RX4 through the venting hose, to avoid that stop and let the rear deferential cool down before entering water. The reason is, when the deferential cools down, the air inside reduces its volume and instead of sucking air it will suck water. You do not want water in your differentials.
3. The RX4?s engine air inlet in just behind the Renault logo sign below the hood. Never let water get near the air inlet as you can hydra lock your engine (filling the cylinders with water).
4. Always go in first gear.
5. Do not try to cross water that flow at a speed of more then 3 meter / second (you can measure the speed by throwing a piece of wood into the water).
6. If possible cross the water by foot or let a better off-road vehicle cross it first so you can see the water deepness.
7. If there is a chance you will get stuck, tie a pulling strap to the rear end of your RX4, before you enter the water. Use the tool kit and the special hole for that.

With my RX4 I crossed water that reached the front bumper with out any problems (I have a video clip of the event that I can email), just keep to the rules and you will be fine..

Hallo Alex !!!

Was hast du denn zukuenftig?

renaultsg64,

The following article claims that the RX4 can cross water at 500+mm.

Look at:
http://www.dooyoo.co.uk/motors/cars/ren ... ew/400388/

You can also look at my movie, the one Alex posted at:
http://www.v3rtico.de/rx4-forum/viewtopic.php?t=41

You can see that I crossed water deeper then 250 mm.

It would be interesting to know how the article you motioned measured the water wadding depth of the RX4.

mmmh here are the rows from the link:
The RX4 is raised by 90mm over the 2wd Scenic and has a ground clearance of 210mm at the rear and 185mm at the front. Yet it's wading depth is above that of lots of its rivals like the Freelander or the Nissan X trail at 500+mm, that is at a speed of 5 mph. If you find your road covered with floodwater I would advise you to not attempt to drive through it unless you can see the road the other side and that you know its depth. Diesel engines will have to be replaced if water is sucked into the engine through the air filter as all the rods and pistons bend under the pressure. So it is advisable for all to know the location of the air filter, some, like the Citroen ZX or Renault Espace have their intake very low to the ground and driving through just a few inches can be enough to wreck the engine.
I think we have to wait for an official reply of Renault AG.
Maybe this RX4 was "tuned" for water crossing ;-)
