Rear brake calipers

Beitrag von Simon G »

Hi All, Im an new user to this forum and am searching for information on the rear brake calipers assembly of my RX4,
On trying to replace the pads, I found that i couldnt recess the piston into the caliper assembly, Not with a g.Clamp or even a pad spreading tool.
Am I missing something? or does anyone have any handy hints or tips on how to do this?

Thanks in advance

Unfortunately I don't have a solution but I had the same problem last month. Are we missing something?

Hello Simon G and Brad,

there is a trick to it: you have to screw the piston in.

Take a screwdriver over two of the notches an turn back in as far as possible.
There should be some sort of mark somewhere on the piston.
Turn the piston out again until the mark lines up with the air escape screw.

Hi Harald,
Thank you so much for this, I will give it a go this weekend,
when you say screw the piston in, do you mean that you just have to get it alligned with the air escape screw, and where exactly are those marks, (Under the rubber piston boot?)

Thanks again.

Hi Simon,

I read this from a repair manual, because I will have to replace the pads this month sometime for my first time, too.

I don`t know if you got already the pads out, so I start with this first, maybe useful to other readers, too.

First you have to get the pads out.
This is done by pulling off one of those spline clamps that secures one of the guiding wedges that hold the pads.
Then tap the guiding wedge out with a small metal punch and a hammer.
The pads should be loose enough now to pull them out.

From the drawing in the manual the mark- or marks- (the drawing is not too good) on the piston should be right beside the notches and on the surface which contacts the pads.
The piston must be screwed in as far as possible and then back out until the next mark alligns with the air screw.

A friend told me Audi has similar brakes, maybe this is a help, too.

Sorry that I can`t provide real first hand experience :(

I hope my English is good enough (thanks to my old Cassell dictionary :-) ) to explain technical matters.

Good luck and please let me know how it went.

Regards

Harald
